Apple Pay password-free payment with Bank of China card

TL; DR#

If the Bank of China branch in your area does not provide a dynamic password (the device with a small screen), then you will definitely have to enter a password every time you use Apple Pay for payment.

Problems Encountered#

When using Apple Pay (the "Wallet" app on iPhone) for payment, a six-digit payment password is required for Bank of China cards, while other banks (at least Agricultural Bank of China and China Merchants Bank) do not require this.

Theoretical Method#

In theory, in the Bank of China mobile banking app - Apple Pay, after selecting any card, clicking on the i at the bottom right will take you to the settings page for that card, where you can see a switch for small amount password-free payment. As long as we can turn on this option, we can avoid entering a password - is it really that simple?

Frustration Encountered#

If you try to turn on this switch, you may encounter the following two error messages:

  1. No matching security tool PB123 This error occurs when the mobile shield is not enabled.
  2. No security tool meeting the conditions This error occurs when the mobile shield is enabled.

From the error messages, it seems that the account does not have a suitable security tool. However, even with the mobile shield enabled, the error still occurs, which is puzzling, considering that the mobile shield is currently the strongest security guarantee for Bank of China cards.

Turning the Tide#

After searching online, I found a user on a forum who had encountered this issue and already solved it: he mentioned that after obtaining a dynamic password for the card, the switch for password-free payment on Apple Pay could be turned on. The dynamic password is a small device with a small LCD screen displaying a six-digit number as a verification method.
After seeing this post, I also went to a branch and inquired about the situation.

Hopeless Solution#

At the branch, I spoke with the branch manager about how to enable password-free payment on Apple Pay. Upon hearing that the error persisted even after enabling the mobile shield, he was very surprised and said he didn't know what to do. When I mentioned that a dynamic password might be needed, he mentioned that the mobile shield should have completely replaced the dynamic password, and they no longer provide services for obtaining dynamic passwords. He seemed helpless regarding my situation.

Conclusion#

  1. Apple Pay really lacks presence in China, and this issue with Bank of China is hardly mentioned by anyone. To be honest, for major services in China, I have only seen apps from the Meituan group supporting Apple Pay.
  2. Bank of China does have oversights when it comes to phasing out outdated services and similar situations, requiring an outdated service to use a particular function.
